I am a consultant dermatologist and dermatological surgeon. I am a specialist in Mohs micrographic surgery for skin cancer having trained with Dr. Neil Swanson and Dr. Ken Lee at Oregon Health and Sciences University, Portland, Oregon, USA. I have been a consultant at Queens Medical Centre in Nottingham for over 7 years. My private practice is at the Nottingham Woodthorpe Hospital and BMI Park Hospital. 

My expertise is in the early detection of skin cancer and I specialise in surgical and non-surgical treatments for skin cancer. I undertake laser treatment in the NHS for children’s birthmarks such as port wine stains and haemangiomas and privately for some cosmetic indications. I also see all dermatology problems with a particular interest in Acne.

My theme of research has been photodynamic therapy (PDT) for basal cell carcinoma, intraepidermal carcinoma (Bowen’s disease) and solar keratoses. As such I have been involved in multicentre international studies on PDT and have published over 100 abstracts and manuscripts.

I co-founded the Karen Clifford Skin Cancer Charity (SKCIN) and as chairman (2006-8) helped to raise over £33,000 placing this new charity dedicated to skin cancer patients on a sound financial footing.

Since 2005, I have been an executive committee member of the BSDS and in 2006 I organised the largest and most successful surgical workshop in the past 25 years. Recently I was elected as Treasurer of The Society (2009-12).

As a teaching hospital doctor I regularly teach medical students, junior doctors, dentists nurses and GPs. I teach in Nottingham, around the UK and have presented at international Dermatology meetings. I am Lead Clinician (2005 – 2009) for the Nottingam Nurse Surgery Course.

One of my interests is cricket. As such, I have screened Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club for skin cancer and discussion sun protection and skin cancer prevention for the past few years including players such as Ryan Sidebottom, Graeme Swann, Stuart Broad, Kevin Pieterson and others.
