Cysts

The increasing volume of skin cancer surgery means I can no longer offer treatment for cysts. Sorry.

Rule no. 1. Make sure a cyst is a cyst and not a cancer

Rule no. 2. A harmless cyst does not necessarily need removal if it is not causing any problems

cysts - DermnetNZ

Types

  1. Epidermoid
  2. Pilar
  3. Dermoid
  4. Rare proliferating trichilemmal cyst - Cocks peculiar tumour

Epidermoid cysts are the commonest and could be considered to be like a pea in a pod. In this instance removal is relatively straightforward with local anaesthetic.

Some cysts that have been inflamed, infected or burst in the past or are recurrent can be a little trickier as the pea may now have become adherent to the surrounding skin. Nevertheless, usually local anaesthetic surgery can successfully undertaken.
